Deleting a branch is permanent. Although the deleted branch may continue to exist for a short time before it actually gets removed, it CANNOT be undone in most cases. Continue?
This was my brief research into SO clones:
OSQA seems to come up as a good StackOverflow alternative...they have both hosted and open source models. http://www.dzonesoftware.com/products/answerhub-versus-osqa
Askbot also has hosted/open source models: http://askbot.com/ https://github.com/ASKBOT/askbot-devel (used by fedora, ros)
Another is https://github.com/Erudika/scoold - java based, looks pretty decent: https://live.scoold.com/
Have you also considered using a forum, something like Discourse?
I think a forum would be a better fit than a simple SO clone, because it allows more freeform discussion around issues. SO is pretty strict on "staying on topic" when asking questions.
The thought process was to use chat for quick/immediate/informal interactions and a Q&A-like site for building a longer-term KB.
One of the reasons we don't want to just use StackOverflow itself is that it's very strict with what counts as a question. We wouldn't be as strict with whatever we use.
I like the look of Vanilla Forums:
It's apparently super themable too.
https://spectrum.chat is another solution
We're using discourse.lbry.io for now
